If you’re in your 40s, you’re probably in excellent health and ready to start enjoying the life you’ve worked so hard to create. Breast cancer screenings, perimenopause, and other hormonal changes are other things to think about during this period. We asked professionals about what people should quit doing to have their healthiest decade ever, and this is what they said: For the sake of your own and others’ health, read on to learn the Telltale Signs You’ve Already Had COVID.
1. Neglecting to take care of oneself

Anne Poirier, the author of The Body Joyful and expert on body image and non-diet coaching, says, “The stress you’re under may increase dramatically if you ignore your own mind and body. Today, a high-stress lifestyle is a sign of success. If you want to feel better overall and live a longer, healthier life with fewer aches and pains, lower blood pressure, and fewer health problems, try cutting down on your stress levels. Meditation, yoga, mindfulness, socializing, learning to express yourself, and paying attention to your physical needs (hunger, fatigue, boredom, loneliness, etc.) are all examples of self-care practices.”
2. Lack of Sleep

Defining the term, Poirier says, “Our ability to obtain a good night’s rest declines with age. Reduced sleep duration is a common trend. The National Sleep Foundation suggests a nightly slumber of 7 to 8 hours. If you don’t get enough shut-eye, you may notice a rise in your body mass index (caused by elevated cortisol levels) and an increase in your chance of developing cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer. When we sleep, our bodies and minds may both recharge. The situation reminds me of someone who is attempting to pour from an empty cup.”
3. Ignoring Your Weight and Its Effects

Bariatric Journal’s Chief Surgeon Dr. Hector Perez says, “Weight gain is more common as people become older since their metabolisms slow down. Extra pounds increase the danger of developing heart disease, diabetes, and other illnesses.”
4. Too Little Calcium in Your Diet

At Mighty Health, Certified Health Coach Lindsay Tullis says, “Only around 30 percent of Americans consume the recommended 1,200 milligrams of calcium per day for women over the age of 40. Deficiencies in calcium have been linked to a hastened progression of osteoporosis, worse bone health, more frequent muscle cramps and spasms, and an increased risk of blood clots. Women over 40 really benefit greatly from calcium.”
5. The Neglect of Mental Health

As Tullis explains, “One in five people over 55 will have a mental health problem in any given year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Increased vulnerability to mental health problems is associated with aging owing to reasons such as chronic pain, mobility impairment, death of loved ones, loss of independence, and other significant life changes. As a general rule, women over the age of 40 have neglected their own needs in favor of those of others. It’s just as crucial to maintaining our mental health as we age as it is to keep our bodies in good shape.”
6. Inappropriate Diet During Menstrual and Other Hormonal Changes

According to Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD, “Women who are now 40 or older are approaching menopause. If you don’t eat because your hormones tell you to, you might end up with weight gain, mental problems, weak bones, and more. There is some evidence that a woman’s diet may have both beneficial and detrimental effects on her menopausal symptoms.
Various Foods
During menopause, a woman’s estrogen levels begin to decline, putting her at a greater risk for a variety of health problems. During menopause, many women experience sudden, intense flushing of the skin. Researchers have shown that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may cut down on both hot flashes and nocturnal sweats. Fatty fish and chia seeds are good sources of this important fatty acid.
Women experiencing menopause have an additional health worry related to the decrease in estrogen: bone health. It’s crucial at this time to raise one’s intake of bone-healthy nutrients. Vitamins D and K, two of these minerals, are concentrated in dairy products.
Avoidable Foods
Hot flushes and insulin resistance have been related to eating processed meals and refined carbs. This group of foods is harmful to anyone’s health, but it’s particularly harmful to menopausal women.”
7. Avoiding Healthy Foods, Especially Fruits and Vegetables

Nutritionist and Candida Diet author Lisa Richards adds, “Even things like the effects of diet on aging and skin health are frequently overlooked or taken for granted. Toxins may harm the body and hasten the aging process. Vitamin C’s antioxidant capabilities make it a useful vitamin for keeping the skin healthy and undamaged. The lack of plant components found in fruits and vegetables is linked to premature aging and poor health. This is due to the fact that these molecules act as antioxidants in the body, and antioxidants decrease the presence and damage caused by free radicals. Externally and internally, free radicals destroy cells in the same way that poisons do. This may speed up the aging process in numerous ways.”
